Review: Arc6 LS * 27 Sep 2008 *

Arc6 is a micro processor based, single CR123 battery, piston drive (PD), programmable LED flashlight. Arc6 uses Seoul SSC P4 LED as its illumination source. As the name suggests, Arc6 is 6^th revision of legendry LS series. Like Arc AAA, Way back in 2001 Arc Flashlight was one of the first manufacturer ever to launch a CR123 battery based Power LED flashlight. Arc6 is designed as a bright illumination tool for EDC (Every Day Carry) keeping four key factors in to consideration namely flashlight size, runtime, brightness and durability. Firstly, the size to be small & pocketable so that you can carry it on a daily basis without any concerns i.e. easy for every day carry. Secondly the runtime should be enough to last long for emergencies at a low brightness level. At the same time the brightness should be enough to illuminate greater distances. And lastly Arc6 should be durable enough to be used in range of situations including rain & fire. To put it in simple words, here is a quote manufacturer "It should be at least as durable as the person carrying it". Reflector in Arc6 is built from solid aluminium and it has a LOP finish. Lens protecting the LED and reflector is AR coated Sapphire lens. The bezel ring is built from Titanium (Ti-6AL-4V) and is crenellated. Arc6 uses advanced electronics fully regulated buck boost circuit to drive the LED. Arc6 has two programmable light output levels with sufficient illumination for general illumination as well as high output demanding purposes. Body of Arc6 is built from 6061 Aluminum. Natural color hard anodized type III coating on Arc6 provides excellent environmental protection and resistance against wear and tear. Arc6 LS has dual switching mechanism. One is through twisting head and second is through actuating the piston. There are O-ring seals at various locations in head and battery tube for waterproofing. Arc6 is waterproof to 100 feet. Overall build quality of Arc6 is good. Arc6 flashlight is packaged in trapezoid shape white colored hard paper box. Arc6 box includes CR123 lithium battery. JETBeam Jet II Pro IBS is high output, single CR123 battery based LED flashlight. JETBeam has extended its Professional Infinite Brightness System lineup with the launch of Jet II Pro IBS. Jet II Pro has premium Q5 bin Cree LED. As with other professional series, the body of Jet II Pro IBS is machined from T6016 aircraft grade Aluminium. For environmental protection, Jet II Pro has type 3 military grade hard coat anodizing. The black HAIII coating provides superior corrosion resistance and high durability. The quality of machining for Jet II Pro is flawless. A removable pocket clip comes pre installed on Jet II Pro. Battery tube and other internal parts including threads are treated with corrosion protective chemical. The chemical gives a distinctive golden color finish to flashlight interiors. There are multiple O-Ring seals at various locations in for water resistance. Jet II Pro meets IPX-8 standard for waterproofing. JETBeam Jet II Pro IBS has 3 mode micro controller controlled, programmable, digitally regulated drive circuit, with three brightness levels. Ra Twisty (Ra-T-100) is single CR123 battery size based, multi light level, premium quality LED flashlight. Ra Twisty uses Seoul SSC P4 LED as a illumination source for bright light output. Reflector used for Ra Twisty is built from solid aluminium and has LOP finish. Ra Twisty has three brightness settings which are achieved by twisting the battery compartment. Ra Twisty uses advanced electronic micro controller based drive circuit. The micro controller regulates the light output and controls the light output based on the state of twist switch, condition of battery and temperature of SSC P4 LED. Ra Twisty is built from aerospace Aluminium alloy anodized with military spec type III hard coat. Hard coat anodizing provides protective coating over the aluminium alloy body and protects the light from wear and tear. Overall construction of Ra Twisty is extremely strong with thick body walls. Inside Ra Twisty, both battery contacts are spring loaded and have triple point brass contacts ensuring excellent connectivity. O-Ring seals are installed at various places for waterproofing. TerraLUX TLE-20 new generation Nichia Regel warm white LED based MiniMag AA and MiniMag AAA bulb replacement module. TerraLUX TLE-20 has relatively higher light output as compared to original filament bulb. Nichia Regel LED due to it's warm tint closely matches the color rendering quality of incandescent bulb, yet offers a whiter beam of light. Arc-AAA has single light output level which has sufficient illumination for most of the general illumination purposes. Body of Arc-AAA Premium GS is built of Type III Hard Anodized 6061 Aluminum. HA III coating provides excellent environmental protection and resistance against wear and tear. Almost completely, whole of the battery tube and the head are heavily knurled for excellent grip. The switching mechanism of ARC-AAA Premium GS is through twisting head. The battery contacts inside the flashlight are stainless steel ensuring good durability. The body internally is treated with Chemkote for increased corrosion resistance. There is an O-Ring seal between head and battery tube for waterproofing. ARC-AAA Premium GS is waterproof to 100 feet. Nyogel 779ZC, Nyogel 759G and Nyogel 760G are special type of high-quality, synthetic lubricant greases from Nye Lubricants Inc. Nye products are carefully engineered materials, formulated for a specific application marketed under SmartGrease™ brand.

Nyogel 779ZC is relatively thick, lower in viscosity grease that offers a higher level of damping and water protection. NyoGel 779ZC is silica thickened, synthetic hydrocarbon grease intended for mechanical components. It is designed and rated for temperatures from -20°C to 125°C. NyoGel 779ZC contains special additives for reducing wear of metal surfaces. NyoGel 779ZC works well for the flashlight o-rings at the bezel and tail cap as well as on threads on flashlights.

NyoGel 759G is relatively soft, higher in viscosity grease that offers a smoother feeling and lower level of damping. Like 779ZC, Nyogel 759G is also a silica thickened, synthetic hydrocarbon grease. Nyogel 759G is designed for the lubrication and protection of electrical contacts. NyoGel 759G is rated for temperature ranging from -40°C to 125°C.

NyoGel 760G is very similar to 759G. In fact, NyoGel 759G is now replaced by NyoGel 760G. NyoGel 760G offers slightly higher thermal stability and is rated for temperature ranging from -40°C to 135°C. In addition to that, NyoGel 760G has UV dye for inspection and copper passivator is added to it for enhanced corrosion prevention. Like Nyogel 759G, the NyoGel 760G is relatively soft, higher in viscosity grease offering a smoother feeling and lower level of damping. NyoGel 760G is also a synthetic hydrocarbon grease that is designed for the lubrication and protection of electrical contacts.

Note that NyoGel Nyogel 779ZC, Nyogel 759G and Nyogel 760G are not electrically conductive but designed for lubricating surfaces that are conductive. They offer great environmental and corrosion protection and extend the life of components in use.

Lighthound no longer carries NyoGel 759G and at the time of this review, Lighthound offers the latest Nyogel 779ZC and Nyogel 760G. This review is for 25 gram tubes of Nyogel 779ZC and Nyogel 759G that we have been using since as early as July 2006. In this review we share our experience of over 2 years using Nyogel 779ZC and Nyogel 759G lubricants. 25 grams is enough lubrication for hundreds or even thousands of applications. For more than 2+ years we have been using on considerable number of flashlights and yet we have about 25% of supplies still available. Supply for most users may last even longer.

Top Ten Flashlights 2008 Q2 results are out. Recently released NiteCore Extreme TM from Edge Tactical Co. Ltd stormed in to the first place both in terms of total hits as well as shear volume & interests. Not to be sidelined the NiteCore Defender Infinity Silver Special Edition flashlight also took the second place. Remember the Orb Wee NS from Lummi that was reviewed last year? This year, another excellent flashlight from Lummi, the Orb Raw NS snatches the third place. The Orb Wee NS continues to receive good response and is in top ten places by shear volume. Fenix TK10, an evolved & improved version of Fenix T1 Tactical took over the lead over its predecessor. Cree LED's Super Premium R2 bins are now appearing on some of the premium flashlights. Other excellent flashlights that make to top ten by hits per day are JetBeam Jet1Pro, Olight T20 Q5, LRI Proton Pro and Zebralight H50 Q5. The NiteCore Defender Infinity Silver has two light operating levels both of which are are configurable through light programming. Both the light levels are memorized by the electronic circuitry. LED used in NiteCore Defender Infinity Silver is high efficiency Cree 7090 XR-E Premium Q5 binned WC tint LED. Reflector of NiteCore Defender Infinity Silver is built from solid Aluminium with Light Orange Peel (LOP) reflector finish. The Glass lens in front is anti-reflective impact resistant lens with Dual-Coating (TM). Dual-Coating is the specialty diamond coating on outer surface of the lens over the AR coating. The NDI Silver uses digitally regulated electronic drive circuit along with micro controller based programming unit. Brightness levels are controlled by turning the head. Orb Raw NS is good looking two light level Nickel Silver Flashlight from Lummi. Powered by single rechargeable 1/2 AA size Li-Ion battery (ICR14250 Li-ion). Raw NS is small, pocketable, bright and high quality flashlight. The solid state illumination source of Raw NS is Cree 7090 XR-E Premium Q5 binned LED. Orb Raw NS uses simple twin level direct drive electronic circuitry. It offers very simple yet reliable operation. Switching between high and low output is achieved by twisting the bezel. There is a micro switch installed on the inner side of head. The micro switch is activated first for low and further twist activates the high mode. Review Update: LRI Proton Pro * 05 Jun 2008 *

Detailed light operation added. Also a final test for the same battery was performed exactly 20 days after the last test. The purpose of this test was to determine, just in case if you leave a highly depleated battery in the flashlight, how it well performs. *Warning* this does not mean, you should always keep a depleted battery in the flashlight. The Alkaline battery may leak and damage the flashlight. The purpose of this experiment is just to proove the runtime with intermitant operation and to determine how battery performs, just in case if you leave a highly depleated battery. Here are the results.

The last peak and decay of light output shows that light was able run for another 10 minutes and then it entered moon mode. By this time, the Red LED was already switched on indicating the depleted battery.

Myth Buster: Alkaline Runtime for LRI Proton Pro * 05 May 2008 *

Alkaline AA Myth Buster: Alkaline battery does not perform well on continuous high current discharge. But at the same time, if given time to rest between high current discharges, it is also true that the Alkaline battery has property to recover itself. To prove this, each day LRI Proton Pro was operated for 10 minutes for 9 days (total of 90 minutes) and corresponding light output was logged. Looking at the runtime test results below, it is clear that Alkaline battery would give far more runtime this way than a single continuous usage. Notice the peaks in light output, that actually marks the beginning of each day. Even after 9th day, the battery has not depleted completely. Another final continuation of test will be performed after resting the battery for 2 weeks.

What this means that during practical purposes, especially when you use the light for say 3 - 5 minutes a day, the light will last for reasonably long duration. This fact is not just true for LRI Proton pro but for for any light that has high current draw (above 1 Amp). For lights that draw less current (less than 200 mA.. example driving a 5 mm LED @ 30 - 35 mA...) there wont be much of a difference weather the light is used continuously or used in smaller increments on day to day basis.
